Frequently Asked Questions

How Can We Help You?

Find answers to common questions about SFBT training, certification, therapy services, and agency consulting.

About SFBT

What is Solution-Focused Brief Therapy?

Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is an evidence-based therapeutic approach that focuses on client strengths and solutions rather than problems and pathology. Instead of analyzing why problems exist, SFBT helps clients identify what they want and build on times when things are working. Most clients achieve meaningful change in 3-5 sessions.

How is SFBT different from other therapy approaches?

SFBT is fundamentally different in several ways: (1) It focuses on solutions and strengths, not problems and deficits, (2) It is brief by design, not by accident—most clients complete therapy in weeks, not months or years, (3) It emphasizes what clients want to build, not what is wrong with them, (4) It is particularly effective with mandated and resistant clients who struggle with traditional approaches.

What issues can SFBT address?

SFBT is effective for a wide range of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, substance abuse, mandated treatment, family conflicts, and personal growth goals. It is particularly powerful with populations others find difficult to engage.

Training & Certification

Who should attend SFBT training?

Our training is designed for licensed mental health professionals (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, psychologists), social workers, counselors, probation officers, case managers, and agency leadership. Both experienced clinicians and those new to the field benefit from SFBT training.

Do I need prior SFBT experience to attend workshops?

No prior SFBT experience is required for our Fundamentals Workshop. We start with the basics and build from there. Advanced workshops and certification tracks do require foundational SFBT training.

Are CEU credits provided?

Yes, all our workshops provide continuing education credits approved for social work, professional counseling, marriage and family therapy, and psychology licenses. Specific credit hours are listed for each workshop.

How long does certification take?

Most candidates complete our certification program in 6-10 months. The timeline depends on your schedule and pace. The program includes foundational training, advanced practicum, individual supervision, case portfolio development, and specialization training.

Can training be done virtually?

Yes, we offer both in-person (Denver) and virtual training options. Some workshops are exclusively in-person or virtual, while others offer both formats. Check our calendar for specific workshop formats.

Agency Consulting

What types of agencies do you work with?

We work with a wide range of social service agencies including child protective services, substance abuse treatment centers, domestic violence programs, probation departments, mental health agencies, and non-profit organizations serving high-risk populations.

How is agency consulting different from individual training?

Agency consulting goes beyond training individuals to transform organizational culture. We work with leadership, develop implementation plans, provide ongoing support, and help embed SFBT into policies, procedures, and daily operations. The goal is sustainable organizational change, not just individual skill development.

What outcomes can agencies expect?

Agencies typically see significant improvements in staff retention, reduced burnout, faster case closure times, improved client outcomes, and increased staff satisfaction. Our consulting includes outcome measurement so you can demonstrate impact to funders and stakeholders.

Therapy Services

How long does therapy typically take?

Most clients complete solution-focused brief therapy in 3-5 sessions. Some may need fewer sessions, others may need more depending on their goals and circumstances. We believe therapy should not take years.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes, we accept most major insurance plans. We also offer self-pay options with sliding scale fees available. Contact us to verify your specific coverage.

What happens in the first therapy session?

In your first session, we focus on what you want to be different in your life. We explore times when problems are less severe or absent, identify your strengths and resources, and begin building practical solutions. You leave with actionable steps to take immediately.

Do you offer couples and family therapy?

Yes, we provide solution-focused therapy for individuals, couples, and families. SFBT is particularly effective for relationship challenges because it honors each person goals and focuses on building solutions together.
